Every noon from the start of November, children from YCIS Puxi Primary gathered to collaborate on a mural on the 18-meter wall beside the C-Building cafeteria at the Hongqiao Campus. They took on different roles, painting the dragon, including colouring the tail, outlining the eyes, and depicting various characters across its body. The children were enthusiastic about their shared creative task come rain or shine. 

上海耀中(浦西)虹桥校区C楼的餐厅门前,最近很是热闹。每到中午,孩子们就会聚集在一块儿,在长达18米的墙上挥洒自如。他们站在墙前的不同位置,有些忙着给龙的尾巴上色,有些拿起铅笔勾画着龙的眼睛,还有些在龙的身上描绘不同的人物形象......即便天气有些寒冷,孩子们依然热情高涨,在欢声笑语中完成自己面前的小画作。

The mural, titled The Tale of Red Dragon, is a project conceived by the artists in the Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Programme at YCIS Shanghai. Our AIRs in Pudong and Puxi create spectacular art pieces with students from our five campuses throughout the school year. For this project, Ms Elena Hasnas, YCIS Puxi AIR, joined forces with YCIS Pudong AIR Ms Haruka Ostley.

这幅名为“赤龙传说”的壁画作品,是上海耀中“驻校艺术家计划”的一部分。每过一段时间,我们的艺术家就会在学校的不同区域与学生们共同完成艺术作品。这一次,浦西的驻校艺术家Elena Hasnas与浦东的驻校艺术家Haruka Ostley携手,将作画点定在了虹桥校区餐厅前的曲形长墙。11月9日,随着五年级和六年级学生的加入,壁画项目正式开启。

Ms Ostley believes that mural art has the power to transform the energy of a space. She wanted to inspire and welcome audiences with this project, depicting a vibrant dragon that captured their attention. Meanwhile, Ms Hasnas developed the idea of integrating different landscapes and agricultural scenes into the mural to tie into its cafeteria-adjacent location and encourage everyone to cherish the food we eat every day. According to Ms Hasnas, a beautiful mural needs to capture both the eyes and minds of its audience.  

Haruka认为,壁画艺术可以起到提升空间能量的作用,她想通过绘画一条充满活力的龙,来激励和欢迎观众;与此同时,Elena则提出了可以将不同的景观和农业场景融入壁画的想法,在她看来,一副美丽的壁画需要同时捕捉观众的眼球和思想。两位艺术家在讨论过程中,逐渐总结出了壁画的主题——通过龙的形象来吸引观众,制造视觉效果,再加以生动的景观及人物形象,告知大家食物的来之不易,鼓励大家珍惜粮食。

The children participated in all the steps of the mural creation, constantly revising, processing, and putting forward creative opinions, while the two artists helped to guide and inspire throughout.  

在作画过程中,孩子们是唯一主角,他们参与了壁画的所有步骤,不断修改与加工,并不时提出创设性意见,而两位驻校艺术家的角色则更在于启发和引导。

"It was great to involve the children in the whole process. They not only learned the story of the mural story but also shared their suggestions and gave positive feedback. I believe that, together, we created a beautiful and profound piece of work." said Ms Ostley. 

Haruka提到,“让孩子们参与创作这幅壁画的整个过程是很棒的,他们不仅学习了壁画的故事,还分享了自己的建议,并积极反馈。一副成功的壁画,除了美观之外,还应该有深刻内涵,我觉得我们做到了。”        


To mark our Founder’s Day in October this year, Ms Ostley created a mural with YCIS Pudong students at the Regency Park Campus. More than 400 students from Years 1–4 painted a mural on the walls beside the playground.

今年10月,时值耀中耀华“楚珩日”,Haruka在上海耀中(浦东)御翠园校区也进行了一次壁画创作。超过400名来自一至四年级学生在运动场的墙壁上勾勒出心中“家庭”的模样。

Ms Ostley witnessed students in their classes learning about endangered animals and recycling resources to protect the environment. She then thought this could be incorporated into a mural to express the idea of shared community. "It is our responsibility to look after the animals and others on Earth, who are our families," said Ms Ostley. During the creation process, children in each year level were responsible for different sections, and some parents and volunteers also joined the painting ranks. 

Haruka提到,"我看到学生们在课堂上学习濒临灭绝动物相关的知识,还有如何循环利用资源以更好保护环境。于是我想到,为什么不作一幅画来表达大家共处同一大家庭的思想呢?我们有责任照顾地球上的动物和其他人,他们都是我们的家人。实际创作过程中,每个年级的孩子负责了不同的板块,一些家长和志愿者也加入了作画的行列,其乐融融。         

Our AIRs look forward to making even more meaningful, collaborative creations with students on different campuses throughout the academic year! 

在未来,我们的驻校艺术家们还会在不同的校区进行新的创作。期待我们的孩子们创造出更多美好而童真的作品!
